a holiday is a wonderful thing
living in a tree-house in the hills around wye river, glimpsing the blue ocean, surrounded by wonderful eucalypts and being visited by (many) cockatoos, parrots and a kookaburra
apart from winding up and down the great ocean coast, we also slugged up and down some monster stairs, viz visiting the marie gabrielle anchor at wreck beach, near moonlight head
a tourism website says:
There is nothing between you and the ocean 100m below as you drive along limestone cliffs sculpted by the gods. Explore Victoria's infamous Shipwreck Coast. Discover the anchors embedded in the sand, all that remains of the Marie Gabrielle and the Fiji ships that foundered in the 1800s.
in fact there are 366 steps between you and the ocean 100m below. ouch.
i've wanted to come here since i saw a rather romantic photograph of the marie-gabrielle anchor half-buried in the sand, lit by sunset

the tide was still too high for us to venture along the beach to the anchor of the fiji, bizarrely concreted upside down... nowhere near as picturesque as the m-g.
this stretch is part of the great ocean walk

the next day we went to beauchamp falls,
described as being a "moderate, 1 hour return walk". nothing lets you know your lack of fitness like struggling with a "moderate" walk. more description...

the walk passes through magnificent mountain ash forests, with large myrtle beech, blackwood and thick ferns. the track becomes steep before opening to the spectacle of the falls crashing over a ledge into a large pool. located off the aire valley road from beech forest road.

is a wonderful little cake shop located at Freshwater Creek, between Geelong and Torquay on the Bellarine Peninsula, Southern Victoria. Famous with the locals, Freswater Creek Cakes, cannot fail to satisfy your sweet tooth. Filled with flavour and texture, the cake and biscuit varieties will have you salivating; these include a range of sponge cakes, many biscuits, mud cakes, banana, hummingbird, carrot and pineapple cakes. Take home with you, eat in with a nice cuppa.

if we want to take a few more steps, there's the glorious ocean beaches, and bush walks near wye river and kennett river

a review (the vine) of the general store reminds us wye river is a two-horse town, but assures too, that
"there's no longer reason to fear the cafe lattes (OK, perhaps the price — can you blame $4 on geography or is it simply a price gouge?) ...If you want an excellent loaf of sourdough (it had better be, it's $7), get there early before people swoop on them like seagulls on chips.
Six Degrees has done the makeover. It's the type of production the architects probably bang out in their sleep these days, replete with their trademark designer touches: contrasting textures and timbers and recycled bits of this and that. It's great — airy, comfortable and city-cool with reclaimed school chairs that are more comfortable than they might sound.

Willow Haven - Skenes Creek
