living in a tree-house in the hills around wye river, glimpsing the blue ocean, surrounded by wonderful eucalypts and being visited by (many) cockatoos, parrots and a kookaburra
apart from winding up and down the great ocean coast, we also slugged up and down some monster stairs, viz visiting the marie gabrielle anchor at wreck beach, near moonlight head
a tourism website says:
There is nothing between you and the ocean 100m below as you drive along limestone cliffs sculpted by the gods. Explore Victoria's infamous Shipwreck Coast. Discover the anchors embedded in the sand, all that remains of the Marie Gabrielle and the Fiji ships that foundered in the 1800s.
in fact there are 366 steps between you and the ocean 100m below. ouch.
i've wanted to come here since i saw a rather romantic photograph of the marie-gabrielle anchor half-buried in the sand, lit by sunsetthe tide was still too high for us to venture along the beach to the anchor of the fiji, bizarrely concreted upside down... nowhere near as picturesque as the m-g.
this stretch is part of the great ocean walk
the next day we went to beauchamp falls,
described as being a "moderate, 1 hour return walk". nothing lets you know your lack of fitness like struggling with a "moderate" walk. more description...
the walk passes through magnificent mountain ash forests, with large myrtle beech, blackwood and thick ferns. the track becomes steep before opening to the spectacle of the falls crashing over a ledge into a large pool. located off the aire valley road from beech forest road.
these walks have inspired us to do more walks.
there are lots around melbourne to choose from ... watch this space.
